EPRDF denies land giveaways to Sudan

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle

(ADDIS ABABA) – Ethiopian deputy prime minister Demeke Mekonen has dismissed accusations alleging that the horn of Africa’s nation has secretly given away farm lands to neighbouring Sudan along its border with Amhara regional state.

Some exiled opposition outlets have frequently released reports accusing Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state bordering Sudan of giving away Ethiopian lands as large as 1,600 Sq Km to Sudan.

Mekonen said those reports are “baseless” and a deliberate smear campaigns by some irresponsible opposition elements.

While responding to questions during a forum with the Ethiopian Diaspora, the deputy premier underscored there was no “inches” of land offered to Sudan by the Amhara regional state.

“In the first place regional states are not authorized to handle border issues,” he said.

He added “It is only the Federal Government of Ethiopia that has the authority to negotiate and decide on boarder issues. Even in that sense there is no piece of land given to Sudan”.

The Ethiopian official added that “it is so easy that any concerned group or individual can go to the place and check the reality on the ground”.

The issue of border re-demarcation has long been a source of conflict between Ethiopia and Sudan, but the two countries worked during the past years to fix it and established joint projects for the benefit of the residents of the border areas from both sides.

A number of opposition parties accuse the ruling EPRDF-led Ethiopian government of offering large territories of the country to Sudan in order to ease the tension which started in 2001 when the two neighbours tried to re-demarcate their boundary.

However, the Ethiopian government says it only gave back a lands occupied in 1996 which belongs to Sudanese farmers adding no single individual from both sides was displaced at the borders as a result.

Ethiopian officials further argue that Ethiopia and Sudan were only implementing prior agreements signed on border demarcation and there are no land given away to Sudan as had been reported by some Medias.

The deputy prime minister further said that border issues with Sudan could be raised but the government of Ethiopia has the right and duty to keep and maintain the sovereignty of the nation.

He added that the major objectives of such accusations are to create a gap among top leadership; thereby, attempt to jeopardize nation’s development efforts.

Sefardi Haredi Rabbi Refuses To Allow Ethiopian Jews To Marry

Failed Messiah
By Shmarya Rosenberg

The Sefardi chief rabbi of the Israeli city of Petah Tikva has allegedly repeatedly refused to allow Ethiopian Jewish couples to marry, forcing them to leave the city and get married elsewhere, the Times of Israel reported based on a report on Army Radio.

Rabbi Benjamin Atias is a member of the Sefardi haredi Shas Party and the brother of former Housing and Construction Minister Ariel Atias. He allegedly refuses to grant permission for the Ethiopian Jews to marry because he denies (or questions) their Jewishness.

10,000 Ethiopian Jews live in Petah Tikva.

Dachilo Abaye, an Ethiopian Jew Atias refused to allow to marry, reportedly told Army Radio that members of his community were getting married exiled from the city with “hatred for the rabbinate” instead of “joy and happiness.”

“No one can question the Jewishness of Jewish Ethiopians,” Abaye insisted.

There are no civil marriages in Israel. Mixed marriages between Jews and non-Jews are not allowed (unless the Jew converts first to another recognized religion). And all Israeli Jews are forced to marry through the country’s haredi-controlled Chief Rabbinate and its local affiliates.

Until a new law was passed over vehement haredi objections in October 2013, Jewish Israelis were forced to marry in the city where their official residence was located. They needed rabbinic approval for the marriage, and the marriage had to be performed by a local state-sanctioned and state-employed Orthodox rabbi like Atais.

But since October, Jewish Israelis are free to some extent rabbi-shop and can marry outside their home communities. However, all of the other restrictions on marriage, including the necessity to have the ceremony conducted by a state-approved Orthodox rabbi and the need to have a marriage registrar who works under the authority of those Orthodox rabbis approve the marriage beforehand.

“The law and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s procedure mandates that any rabbi who registers marriages serve every Jewish Israeli citizen without discrimination, including members of the Ethiopian community. If a breach of the law or procedure will be discovered in this case, the issue will be thoroughly investigated and rectified,” Israel’s Chief Rabbinate reportedly said in a statement.

Several months ago, the state-recognized chief rabbi of Israel’s Ethiopian Jewish community, Rabbi Yosef Adana, reportedly told the Chief Rabbinate about Atias’ refusal to marry Ethiopian Jews. That reportedly led to a special arrangement that gives 14 Ethiopian rabbis special permission to act as marriage registrars and perform marriages for Ethiopian Jews.

Atias’ behavior is odd because his former leader and mentor, the late supreme Sefardi haredi leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, ruled in 1973 as Israel’s Sefardi Chief Rabbi that Ethiopian Jews are 100% Jewish and do not need to be converted. Yosef ruling as adopted by the entire Chief Rabbinate in the late 1980s and became the law of the land.

However, except for followers of Yosef and a handful of Ashkenazi haredi rabbis, haredim completely reject Yosef’s ruling and the subsequent decisions by the Chief Rabbinate and the country to follow it. Some recognize as Jewish only Ethiopian Jews who have undergone conversion through a recognized Orthodox beit din (religious court) while others refuse to recognize Ethiopian Jews as Jewish unless their conversions were done through an Ashkenazi haredi beit din.

Gondar, Ethiopia (CNN) — France has Lourdes, India has the Ganges. Ethiopia, meanwhile, has Gondar.

Situated about 450 miles north of Addis Ababa, encapsulated by hills and tall trees, and dotted with 17th-century relics from the city’s glory days (when it was the country’s capital), Gondar today can seem somewhat remote. During the religious festival of “Timket,” however, the city is inundated with pilgrims who come to re-enact the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, and take a dip in the holy waters at the historical Fasilides Bath.

Nearly two thirds of Ethiopia’s 94 million population is Christian, and the majority of those belong to the Orthodox church. For them, Timket — celebrating the Epiphany — is among the most important occasions of the year. It’s is a two-day affair that begins with a procession of “tabots,” holy replicas of the Ark of the Covenant — the sacred chests described in the Book of Exodus as carrying the stone tablets on which the 10 Commandments were written.

The tabots are wrapped in cloth and placed on the heads of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian priests, who parade the streets en route to the bath. The priests, clad in ceremonial robes, are escorted by drums and by the clapping and singing of worshipers, who hold an overnight vigil until dawn.

There are services the following morning which culminate in the priests blessing the waters of the historic bath, while onlookers crowd every nook surrounding the bath — some getting a pristine view from nearby trees.

When the priests are done, the mood turns jubilant, and the spectators rush to jump into the pool.

The water is now sacred, and the sick shall be cured
Ezra Adis, head priest

“The water is blessed in the name of the Holy Trinity … in the name of God. The water is now sacred, and the sick shall be cured,” explains Ezra Adis, the head priest at the local Medhanelem Church.

“That is why the young people who jump in first get excited; it is a spiritual love,” he adds.

The plunge is so swift that some participants get battered in the process — though most are unperturbed by a few scratches.

Awaiting daybreak during Timket
Holy water wash away sins

“I jumped from high above,” boasts one man who dived into the waters from one of the nearby trees.

“I was apprehensive,” he adds. “The branches could give way and you could fall on the rock edge of the pool, and there was a possibility I could have lost my life, but at this moment, I am doing what I feel good about, and that possibility of death doesn’t scare me.”

The Timket festival dates back to the 16th century, but it was marked only in churches until the baptismal ceremonies were introduced, explains Bantalem Tadesse Tedla, a historian at the University of Gondar.

The baptisms, usually held on January 19, are celebrated differently in other parts of the country. “There are three options for Timket,” says Tedla. “To be immersed, to collect water from three pipes and pour it on people, or to collect water and sprinkle it — it depends on the availability of water.

“In Gondar, the first is implemented, because of the existence of this very important building,” he adds, referring to the stone bath — a UNESCO world heritage site built in 1632 for King Fasil (Fasiledes).

As the afternoon winds down, people begin to leave the pool and head back to the streets, but the festivities aren’t quite over. Each tabot is now paraded back to its respective church with crowds of onlookers eager to get one last look at them.

Back at the churches, it’s a different, quieter scene. Congregants fill the church grounds to listen in on a final service, and after a closing prayer it’s time to send the tabot back inside the church to its resting place.

The locals will eventually return to their homes for a special feast, but in the meantime, the celebrations on the streets of Gondar continue — a chance for orthodox Christians to celebrate and come together for one of the most sacred and festive days of the year.

Astounding Revelations on the Road to Gondar, Ethiopia the Garden of Eden

02/03/2014

By Bernard Anderson, MD

It was April, 2008, a bleak 5 A.M. in Meskel Square, Addis Ababa that we set out for Gondar, 740 kilometers away on the Sky Bus. It was my third time to make the trip, and I was no longer glued to the vistas on the other side of the window as the bus speedily but steadily made its way through the mountains and villages of the Ethiopian northern highlands. I soon fell asleep, hypnotized by the cold and dark of an Ethiopian morning 2,200 meters above sea level, as well as by the rolling neon sign in big red characters above the driver’s head declaring to all: “Young Entrepreneur, German Engineering, Chinese Price…Young Entrepreneur, German Engineering, Chinese…”.

Road to GondarFirst stop at Dejen marked a successful passage through “The Gorge”- a deep valley cut by the Ghion of the bible, or the Abbay of the Ethiopians, themselves the children of Kis (later the Cush/Kush of the Hebrew), recorded first in the hieroglyphs of Kmt in 1970 BCE.There we got a chance to stretch our legs, use the bathroom and to have lunch in any of several small hotels. All aboard again, we set off to Gondar passing through the towns of Debre Markos, Dembecha, Finote Selam, Injibara, Dangla and finally Bahirdar, at the southern point of lake Tana, (Ethiopia’s largest lake and Africa’s 2nd largest), from where it pours it’s waters into the head of the Abbay to become the Blue Nile in the Sudan.

In Sudan it joins the White Nile at Khartoum, from where it runs for 200 hundred miles north to the city of Saba (Merowe since about 500 BCE), This Saba, was a place where many Ethiopian kings and queens ruled from. There at Saba/Merowe the Nile is joined by the fabled Atbara, “From there the Nile runs for 1700 more miles to the Mediterranean sea as the longest river on the planet Earth giving the gifts of life, high culture, and civilization from the Anu, or the Anu/Agu. The first gifts were to Kmt, meaning Black Land. Kmt, later named Egypt by the Greeks, passed them on to the world. Yes, this same Kmt made us know Osiris, Thoth, Isis, Horus and Maat; gave us Imhotep, the architect of Sacara’s Step Pyramid in 2,700 BCE and according to Breasted, was the author of the Smith papyrus. This African Imhotep, was deified posthumously as God of Medicine 2000 years before Hippocrates swore in his “Oath” to him in the name of Asclepius; the same Kmt gave us the city Akhetaten that made us know one God, the primary creative force of nature, whose emblem was the solar disc and also gave us Moses, who tamed the Apiru/Habiru, gave them the law and even the name of their God Jehovah. This generous Kmt, also gave the world the art of writing. These are just a few of the gifts of Kmt and the Nile, the child of Tana and Atbara. How sad now to see Kmt embroiled in conflict and totally disconnected from its glorious and special past. Read More Bernard-Anderson-MD-Road to Gondar
