The violent arrival of Woyane

By Yilma Bekele

We Ethiopians witnessed what those that control our country are capable of doing to unarmed citizens. I am sure the action of the TPLF solder in front of their Embassy in Washington DC is the talk of the town. It is unfortunate that we are not equipped to discuss the criminal act in all its attributes. It has to be put in some form of context to fully understand the criminal act.

Why did the Woyane soldier felt threatened by the action of peaceful unarmed protesters and felt comfortable discharging a lethal weapon is a good question to ask. The whole idea of a protest is to make noise, to call attention and disrupt the daily routine of the targeted enterprise. Protests are normally loud, chaotic and messy. There are times when protesters close a boulevard or a highway, block the entrance, lay down in the middle of the street and use various means to make themselves heard. It is also considered legitimate to plan actions that will attract the media and make the evening news.

Our Ethiopian compatriots were doing that in front of the Woyane Embassy in a peaceful but loud manner to make themselves heard. Now the Embassy has plenty of options on how to handle the situation. They could report the incident to the State Department if they think laws protecting Diplomatic offices were broken. They could call the DC police if they felt threatened. They could ignore the whole situation since from experience of the last few years they know the protesters are not armed no one has ever been hurt and it will be over with no incident.

Why do you think the TPLF solder choose to fire his weapon? Because he is an idiot and savage Woyane is not a satisfactory answer. The reason goes beyond that. How could one person take it upon himself to commit such criminal act is a question that begs for an answer. The video that was shot by the protesters shows the so called Ambassador standing by the door with confusion and bewilderment written all over his face. How could one of his employee act in such outrageous manner is a legitimate line of inquiry. And finally the most important question of all what emboldened this lone solder to do what he did in a place where more Ethiopians reside outside of our homeland is the question that boggles the mind.

The question of the Ambassador is a no brainer. We are most familiar how the TPLF operates. By default we Ethiopians know what is fake and what is real. The vast majority of Woyane Embassies are run by the first secretary while someone from another ethnic group is presented as the person in charge for show.
There is plenty of testimonials from yesterday’s Ambassadors and todays refugees that live among us. I believe our ‘Ambassador’ was unfortunately exposed for the fake he is by the recent event. You really do not think a simple solder would even carry a weapon outside the Embassy gates let alone fire a bullet. I am sure Ato Girma was as surprised as the rest of us.

When it comes to the cadre he was just doing what he does when he sees Ethiopians dare to challenge the authority of Woyane. It just comes natural to our masters and I am sure he is probably confused when the police took him for questioning. We should not be surprised if he is not aware of what illegal and dangerous act he committed. He was probably proud of the tremendous restraint he showed for not killing a few of the protesters that were in his opinion not even afraid when he brandished his gun. He has never come across such rowdy and ill-mannered Ethiopians that showed no fear and refused to back down when told by a TPLF soldier.

The third point I raised is what interests me the most. How does such criminal act take place where so many Ethiopians live is what bothers me the most. Am I surprised? Not really, I have seen it coming the last year or so. We are or should be aware by now Woyane is on the offensive. A few dedicated patriotic Ethiopians have been able to check the advance but that has not stopped TPLF from devising all kinds of ways to circumvent our efforts.
We should be proud that the Ponzi scheme to rob us of our hard earned money to build the so called dam on Abay was made to fail. It is not that we do not think building a dam is a good idea but having seen how Woyane operates we knew it was a well-organized scheme to commit robbery in broad day light. We were not fooled.

Not all of us. There were the unfortunate among us that were forced to play along because they have been neutralized due to the ‘investments’ they made in Woyane land. They were forced to secretly attend the meetings and contribute under the cover of darkness. It was pathetic to see some of them wearing hats and glasses, ducking under the seat of their car and wishing they could be made invisible to go to a meeting they were forcefully ‘invited’. Once you bow to Woyane there is no end to the ass kicking like a donkey administered by illiterate Woyane.

Today our people cannot afford the price of Teff, Berbere, Mitmita even the lowly Shuro due to the fact it is exported to the honorable Diaspora. Today Ethiopian groceries and restaurants that make their money from us have no shame selling these products in their places of business.
Today the Diaspora have no qualms about building condominiums on land stolen from their own parents using Woyane produced cement and imported material. Reminds me of a paper written by Professor Mesfin where he witnessed a long line in Arat Kilo and was sad to find out that it was young people standing to get a job to dismantle their parents’ houses that was taken by Woyane. Most probably the investors were from the Diaspora. They were actually paying for something that was legitimately their own. How in the world do you think Woyane would have any respect for such spineless individuals?

A few months back TPLF solders massacred a lot of students in Ambo, Lekemt and Adama because they have the nerve to protest confiscation of their parents land. We heard it and we kept quiet. We knew it was wrong but we did not do anything about it.
A few years back TPLF deported Ethiopians based on their ethnic origin and some cheered and a lot pretended not to know or care. We kept quiet.
A year or two ago the TPLF using its surrogates deported Amhara’s from the southern region and the west and some protested but plenty covered their eyes and ears. We kept quiet.

The apathy we exhibit is what made our cadre soldier/first secretary/real Ambassador fire his gun without thinking twice. In his trained eye we are not worthy of respect. We are not humans. I do not blame him I blame us for giving him the power to think and act like that. Even here where we live in peace and where there is so much money to be made by legal means some of us think it is acceptable to use our economic might to pray on our people. The mind is a powerful machine but it is also gullible. I am sure those that dance with Woyane criminals convince themselves that they are helping their country and they are honorable people doing honest work. No you are not. You enable TPLF criminals.

I have no business passing judgment on your activities but when your activity gives a rogue regime like we have in Ethiopia a sense of invincibility to frighten my sisters and brothers that were peacefully protesting it makes me angry. We are here because home is not such a good place to live in peace, live without fear, live with honor and love. Now they have come here to do to us what they do to our people back home. Some of you due to your selfish act are inviting them over to disturb our peace. The question is what more nefarious plan do they have for us?

I have not enough words to praise those that took a day off their schedule to act as the voice of their people. All I could say is we are all proud of you and we are glad no one was hurt and I only wish I was there with you doing the most important thing in life – showing you care for those

REUTERS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Secret Service detained a possible shooter after a report that shots were fired on Monday near the Ethiopian embassy in Washington, a spokesman for the agency said.

The possible shots were reported at about 12:15 p.m. EDT and there have been no injuries reported, spokesman Brian Leary said in an emailed statement.

‘We don’t like blacks,’ say suspects in beating of Ethiopians
Two Petach Tikva men suspected of brutal racist attack on two immigrants • “Why are Ethiopians allowed to roam free?” suspect asks police • One victim suffers skull fractures • “They beat us and we asked them why they were doing it. They said, ‘Because.’”

Two men from Petach Tikva in central Israel brutally attacked two Ethiopian immigrants over the weekend solely out of racism, according to police.

The victims, aged 35 and 74, were on their way home from a family event in Petach Tikva when they were attacked, and had done nothing to provoke the attack, police investigators believe. The younger victim suffered skull fractures and was taken to Beilinson Hospital in a medically induced coma.

Vladislav Sorokov and Alexander Sandovski, both 30, are currently in custody over the attack after their remand was extended on Monday. The two told police investigators that “we don’t like blacks. Who brought the Ethiopians to Petach Tikva and why are they allowed to roam free?”

Around 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Petach Tikva police department dispatched two officers after receiving a call for help.

The investigation suggests that the two suspects pounced on the victims with various weapons and beat them repeatedly until they fell to the ground.

“They beat us and we asked them why they were doing it. They said, ‘Because.’ We lay there bleeding and no one came to help us,” one victim told police.

A search of the suspects’ homes recovered fake guns that were apparently used in the attack. During the arrest, one of the suspects allegedly spat at an Ethiopian police officer.

The CEO of the Tebeka Advocacy for Equality and Justice for Ethiopian Israelis organization said that “all law enforcement bodies are required to bring the attackers to justice and relay a clear message.”

“We as a society must not stand idly by when a man is attacked just because of the color of his skin. That is a red line,” she said.

Zemene_Kasse

According to new Ethiopian Review report :- Ato Zemene Kasse, the field representative of Ginbot 7 in Eritrea and head of political affairs, has been arrested by Shabia, according to Ethiopian Review sources.

It has been several days since Zemene had disappeared after having an argument with Eritrean intelligence agents about the detention of some young Ethiopians under his command who were recruited by Ato Andargachew Tsige and brought from Uganda and South Africa to Eritrea. Repeated request by him to get an answer for their arrest were ignored by Shabia. Then Zemene himself disappeared and one of his friends who is currently in Sudan confirmed to Ethiopian Review today that he is arrested.

Zemene is arrested simply for asking about the well-being of his comrades.

Shabia’s Eritrea has turned out to be a Bermuda Triangle for Ethiopian heroes such as
Zemene,
Andargachew,
Tadesse,
Fisseha,
Getachew,
Yoseph,
Adane,
Kassahun, and so many others.

Sefardi Haredi Rabbi Refuses To Allow Ethiopian Jews To Marry

The Sefardi chief rabbi of the Israeli city of Petah Tikva has allegedly repeatedly refused to allow Ethiopian Jewish couples to marry, forcing them to leave the city and get married elsewhere, the Times of Israel reported based on a report on Army Radio.

Rabbi Benjamin Atias is a member of the Sefardi haredi Shas Party and the brother of former Housing and Construction Minister Ariel Atias. He allegedly refuses to grant permission for the Ethiopian Jews to marry because he denies (or questions) their Jewishness.

10,000 Ethiopian Jews live in Petah Tikva.

Dachilo Abaye, an Ethiopian Jew Atias refused to allow to marry, reportedly told Army Radio that members of his community were getting married exiled from the city with “hatred for the rabbinate” instead of “joy and happiness.”

“No one can question the Jewishness of Jewish Ethiopians,” Abaye insisted.

There are no civil marriages in Israel. Mixed marriages between Jews and non-Jews are not allowed (unless the Jew converts first to another recognized religion). And all Israeli Jews are forced to marry through the country’s haredi-controlled Chief Rabbinate and its local affiliates.

Until a new law was passed over vehement haredi objections in October 2013, Jewish Israelis were forced to marry in the city where their official residence was located. They needed rabbinic approval for the marriage, and the marriage had to be performed by a local state-sanctioned and state-employed Orthodox rabbi like Atais.

But since October, Jewish Israelis are free to some extent rabbi-shop and can marry outside their home communities. However, all of the other restrictions on marriage, including the necessity to have the ceremony conducted by a state-approved Orthodox rabbi and the need to have a marriage registrar who works under the authority of those Orthodox rabbis approve the marriage beforehand.

“The law and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s procedure mandates that any rabbi who registers marriages serve every Jewish Israeli citizen without discrimination, including members of the Ethiopian community. If a breach of the law or procedure will be discovered in this case, the issue will be thoroughly investigated and rectified,” Israel’s Chief Rabbinate reportedly said in a statement.

Several months ago, the state-recognized chief rabbi of Israel’s Ethiopian Jewish community, Rabbi Yosef Adana, reportedly told the Chief Rabbinate about Atias’ refusal to marry Ethiopian Jews. That reportedly led to a special arrangement that gives 14 Ethiopian rabbis special permission to act as marriage registrars and perform marriages for Ethiopian Jews.

Atias’ behavior is odd because his former leader and mentor, the late supreme Sefardi haredi leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, ruled in 1973 as Israel’s Sefardi Chief Rabbi that Ethiopian Jews are 100% Jewish and do not need to be converted. Yosef ruling as adopted by the entire Chief Rabbinate in the late 1980s and became the law of the land.

However, except for followers of Yosef and a handful of Ashkenazi haredi rabbis, haredim completely reject Yosef’s ruling and the subsequent decisions by the Chief Rabbinate and the country to follow it. Some recognize as Jewish only Ethiopian Jews who have undergone conversion through a recognized Orthodox beit din (religious court) while others refuse to recognize Ethiopian Jews as Jewish unless their conversions were done through an Ashkenazi haredi beit din.

Israel: Ethiopian Aliya is not over

Although some have declared the Ethiopian Aliya over, it is clear that it is not complete.

Although some have declared the Ethiopian Aliya over, it is clear that it is not complete. It is true that although most of those who left their Ethiopian villages and registered in either 2003 or 2010 to make aliya have come to Israel, but there are still approximately 3,000 in Gondar and 1,800 in the country’s capital, Addis Ababa, who are desperately waiting.

These are not people who recently decided to leave Ethiopia. Their dream has shaped the mission of their lives for many years.

While some may not be Jews based on standards of halacha, these are people who live as Jews, study as Jews, pray as Jews and whose mother or father is Jewish. Those who are not yet recognized as Jews are prepared to convert. Most have first-degree relatives who received permission to make aliya in the recent past and have become contributing members of Israeli society.

Some of those who did not receive permission for aliya were rejected because their mother was not Jewish – even though they met the conditions of the Law of Return which permits those with a Jewish father to immigrate. Others were summarily rejected without being given a reason for being denied the right to join their families in Israel. Certainly, Israel has the right to reject applicants for good cause, but the individuals should be entitled to a know the rationale – if only to be able to provide evidence that the rejection was based on information that was in error. Recognizing the problems inherent in this situation, the Knesset established a committee to examine the circumstances of those who were “left behind.” Originally, it was anticipated that this committee would be able to complete its work by July 2014. Now, we are told that its mandate is being extended until December.

In the meantime Jews living in Ethiopia are suffering. Most have no jobs because they left their occupations and homes behind in the villages far from Gondar and Addis Ababa. They live in horrid conditions.

They live in uncertainty. All they have is their dreams. Until recent years the world Jewish community reached out to them. There were visits of solidarity.

There was direct support from agencies, including many communal federations in the Diaspora. Most of this aid has now vanished. It is no wonder that these individuals feel abandoned.

There are many who have observed that the war in Gaza has seriously wounded Israel’s economy and state that discussions of resolving the issue of those waiting in Ethiopia must be delayed again. Budget projections made earlier in the year are no longer relevant. Ministries that may have had the elasticity to absorb new immigrants who will require extraordinary support are suffering slashes to their budgets.

They find it difficult to serve the current citizens of Israel without the additional challenge of serving the needs of those coming from Ethiopia. The pain of meager existence in Ethiopia is now compounded by the uncertainty of the realization of their dreams.

Yet, the damage from the Gaza war will not last forever. The economy will certainly improve. With that anticipation, I wish to make a modest proposal: The current committee that is considering exceptions should finish its work without delay and definitively determine the names of the overwhelming majority of those on the 2003 and 2010 lists who will be given the right to make aliya – without respect to funding their aliya or absorption. Concurrently with this determination a realistic projection should be made by the relevant ministries as to how many Ethiopian olim they can support each month in a sensitive time-frame – understanding that lives are at stake and a schedule should be developed. Such a process and decision will give those who have been waiting – some for over a decade – as well as the Israeli government a sense of certainty that will let them live with the reality of the present and have a realistic vision of their future.
